About Us > Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens on a camp?

All camps are different but they start with a welcome meeting and dinner.
The work varies depending on what the particular building needs that particular year but includes:
• Cleaning monuments and statues
• Re-laying stone slabs
• Polishing ornamental woodwork and brass features
• Painting railings, walls and window frames
• Clearing out church crypts and cellars
• Gardening in the church grounds

Without the time and energy of volunteers, these jobs will not get done and spectacular buildings are at risk.

All work is practical and involves physical, hard work. Volunteers of all abilities are welcome, but let us know if you need extra help to be a volunteer so that we can make arrangements.

When are the camps?

The camps run form Wednesday to Wednesday throughout July and August.

Please see the Programme & Locations section for this year's dates.

What does it cost?

Every volunteer pays £100 (or €160) for a one week camp. This price includes all food, accommodation and equipment. Some extra spending money will be required. Volunteers must provide their own travel to and from each camp at the start and end.

Who are the volunteers and leaders?

The volunteers are a diverse range of young people from all over the world, from different backgrounds and cultures. The leaders are all experienced volunteers, who lead the groups in small teams. They all have been trained in health and safety, working with young people and volunteer management.

What do I need to bring with me?

All equipment and food is provided but on certain camps you will need to bring bedding. You will be informed ahead of time if this is required. Work clothes and sensible shoes that you don't mind getting dirty also will be needed.

We suggest that you bring no more than £50 spending money for essential items, social events and outings.

What about time off and social events?

There will be time to relax or explore the town/city during Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Tours and visits around the locality can be arranged. Evenings are generally free for social activities and unwinding with the group. Cathedrals often arrange a Barbecue or other social activity where volunteers can meet people from the local community.

Can I attend more than one camp?

Because places are limited, we try to give as many people as possible the chance to volunteer on one camp. If, however some places are still available closer to the camp start dates, we offer volunteers the opportunity to attend a second camp.
